According to Kicker, Ter Stegen is expected to be selected for the German national team.
Germany's new national team coach Jürgen Klopp's first squad will not be officially announced until Thursday. Ter Stegen's return is to Amsterdam, where Germany will face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 24.
Ter Stegen, 34, did not start in Ajax's match against Willem II Tilburg on Tuesday night. Ajax manager Michel explained the decision.
Michel told ESPN, "He's been out for a long time with the international break coming up." Therefore, Michel believes this is a good time to bring on backup goalkeeper Marten Paz, "so Mark can recover until Saturday and be ready for the upcoming international matches."
Michel also stated that Ter Stegen is "very likely" to join the German national team, after which Ajax will have time to continue helping him recover.
Ter Stegen joined Ajax this summer and has made five league appearances, keeping two clean sheets. Michel and Ter Stegen previously worked together at Girona. Ter Stegen joined on loan from Barcelona but suffered another serious injury after only two appearances, ultimately missing the World Cup.
Ter Stegen's last appearance for the German national team was on June 8, 2025, when Germany lost 0-2 to France in the UEFA Nations League third-place match.
